49 or clinical trials. With its remote regions in the Highlands and Islands and its larger urban centres in the central belt, Scotland offers ideal test-bed scenarios for companies with telemedicine or digital health solutions. Over 200 companies with a base in Scotland offer digital health solutions and Innovation Centres, such as the Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre or the Precision Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre provide digital sandboxes to test solutions with the NHS and access to data for research projects respectively. Another feature of the Scottish healthcare sector is the triple helix, i.e. the close collaboration between Industry, the National Health Service and Academia in Scotland, providing easier access for innovation. Scotland is a small country where people know each other and access to networks and clusters is generally easy. So, it is clear that Scotland offers everything life sciences companies need to succeed. Scottish Development International (SDI) is the Scottish Government’s international trade and investment agency in Düsseldorf and sits alongside the Scottish Government office in Berlin as part of a Team Scotland in Germany. Its remit is to provide support for German companies, who plan to develop business or invest in Scotland. SDI acts as a door-opener to Scotland, providing market information, introductions to Scottish companies, research institutes or government agencies and potential funding for companies that decide to set-up a subsidiary and grow in Scotland. It can equally provide introductions to Scottish companies, for those who consider importing Scottish goods or services. SDI’s parent organisation, Scottish Enterprise, is also Scotland’s largest start-up investor, having invested £55m into 104 early-stage, high-growth companies in 2022/23 and holding a portfolio of over 300 companies, among them many medical technology and biotech enterprises. Scotland’s investment market retained its position as one of the best performing locations in the UK (2022 Risk Capital Market report), only surpassed by the ‘Golden Triangle’ of London, the South-East and East of England, for both deal numbers and amount raised.
